Talking all ZK tech that is leveraged in Web3

In a vibrant Xtalk AMA session on 26 June 2024, hosted by Kody, Chief Experience Officer at Layer One X, a stellar lineup of Web3 innovators dove into the transformative world of zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs). Co-hosted by the ever-supportive Ena, this episode—part of a series sponsored by the Layer One X blockchain protocol—explored how ZKPs, dubbed the "Jedi mind trick" of crypto, are reshaping privacy, scalability, and user experience. With a mix of expert panelists and community engagement, here’s what went down.

Kicking Off with ZKP Magic

Kody set the stage by likening ZKPs to a magic trick: proving you know something without spilling the beans. From enhancing privacy to revolutionizing gaming, ZKPs are already making waves. The panel—featuring voices from Castle of Blackwater, Amplify, Merlin Starter, Arena Games, NOA AI, ZKM, ZKLand, and Slingshot DAO—tackled big questions: How do ZKPs work? Why do they matter? And what’s their future potential?

 What Excites the Experts?

Brian from ZKLand highlighted ZKPs’ scalability power, using math to compress transactions and boost Ethereum and Bitcoin’s base layers. LM from Castle of Blackwater praised their compliance edge, allowing proof of adherence without exposing operations—crucial amid growing regulatory scrutiny. Jeff from Amplify saw ZKPs as a shield against invasive KYC, potentially exposing whether governments prioritize control over safety. Dak from ZKM envisioned ZKPs solving ancient Web3 problems, like unified liquidity across chains, while Omar from NOA AI emphasized their role in securing AI-driven liquidity with verifiable, tamper-proof outputs.

The Dark Side: Computation Challenges

Kody pivoted to ZKPs’ Achilles’ heel: the hefty computing power that slows things down. Dak admitted the current overhead is massive—think half a million—but teased breakthroughs like recursive proofs that could slash it within a year. Brian explained how StarkNet’s Cairo language and parallel sequencers lighten the load, likening ZKPs to buses speeding transactions through a highway. The consensus? It’s early days, but optimization is accelerating.

Trusting the Math: Black Box Risks

A spicy debate emerged around ZKPs’ complexity. Dak flagged the “black box” concern—bugs in the math or software could undermine trust, a point raised by cryptographer Justin Thaler. ZKM’s trace-based approach aims to mitigate this, proving execution at a machine-code level for reliability. LM countered that ZKPs are an evolutionary step for DeFi, predicting future fixes will soften these flaws. Jeff suggested trusted providers might emerge, like Coinbase in the CEX world, balancing innovation with credibility.

Regulation and Audits: A Double-Edged Sword?

LM sparked a fire with a question about audits, noting CertiK’s regulatory ties could compromise privacy. Brian clarified that DeFi audits remain largely free of government meddling, though guidance on AML exists. Kody urged the crypto community to self-regulate with ZKPs, setting standards before regulators impose centralized control—a sentiment echoed by Archie from Merlin Starter, who saw decentralized auditing as a future goal.

ZKPs in Gaming and Wallets

For gamers, FY from Arena Games stressed seamless onboarding, using account abstraction to hide blockchain complexity—ZKPs could amplify this invisibility. Dak agreed, advocating for a UX where users don’t even notice ZKPs. On wallets, Brian and Dak envisioned ZKP-powered smart contract wallets replacing Chrome extensions, offering keyless, invisible security and features like session keys—magic indeed!

This Xtalk AMA was a rollercoaster of education and excitement, proving ZKPs are more than math—they’re a bridge to a private, scalable, user-friendly Web3.
